Mike Haarer

Mike Haarer

Mike Haarer is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and serves as the Director of Compass Rose Academy. He has both a Bachelor of Arts degree and Master of Arts degree in counseling from Grace College in Winona Lake, Ind. He married his wife Emily in 2006, who worked as a math teacher at White’s Jr./Sr. High School until their daughter Corabelle Rose was born in 2011. Their second daughter, Olivia Pearl, was born in 2013. Mike and Emily are originally from the Fort Wayne area and still enjoy spending time there with their families. They are actively involved in their local church in Wabash, where Mike leads worship and they host a small fellowship group.

Ben Makin

Ben Makin

Ben Makin has worked with kids and teens for the last seven years in a variety of roles and has a passion for youth development. As Philosophy of Care Coordinator, Ben helps bring the therapeutic model to the cottage by bridging the gap between therapy and everyday living. He is currently working on obtaining his Master of Arts in Counseling from Huntington University, and has aspirations to enter the mental health field as a licensed therapist. He received his Bachelors of Science in Psychology from Geneva College where he was a varsity soccer player for four years.

Joel Makin

Joel Makin has both a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Master of Arts degree in counseling from Huntington University. He serves as a therapist where he’s in charge of creating and facilitating group programs, conducting individual, group and family counseling and aiding in the overall improvement of the residential atmosphere. Over the years, Makin has served as a counselor, facilitator and therapist for a variety of different organizations with the similar mission of helping youth find their path in life and furthering their Christian faith.

Madeline Spring

Madeline Spring is a Therapist for Compass Rose Academy. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Malone University in Canton, Ohio, and a Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Huntington University. She married her husband, Aaron, in 2008. Madeline and Aaron are originally from central and northern Ohio, and moved to Wabash, Indiana when they were married in 2008 to follow God’s call serving CRA’s parent organization, White’s Residential and Family Services. They have since had three children: Micah was born in 2010, Charlotte in 2012, and Amara in 2014. Madeline and Aaron are active members of their local church in Wabash, where they both serve in the nursery as well as on church committees, boards, and Madeline on their church’s Counseling Center board. They also each participate in and lead their own leadership and discipleship groups based on Dr. John Townsend’s Growth Model.

Nicole Cavender has both a Bachelor of Science degree in Youth Ministries from Indiana Wesleyan University and a Master of Arts degree in counseling from Huntington University. She serves as a therapist where she’s in charge of creating and facilitating group programs, conducting individual, group and family counseling and aiding in the overall improvement of the residential atmosphere. Nicki has 9 years experience working as house parent and therapist at a character-based therapeutic boarding school and wilderness camp. She has also worked for three years in the community mental health environments.

Katie Hartman is a therapist at Compass Rose Academy with a long list of experience in counseling both adults and teens. It was through her internship in Honduras during her undergrad career that Katie discovered her real passion for helping those who are in emotional pain and in need of guidance. Katie earned her bachelor’s degree in Missions and her master’s degree in counseling both from Huntington University. Katie is also working towards being accredited as a licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) which she hopes to complete this summer. Katie strives to encourage students to see the benefits of engaging in the world in healthier ways and seeing their futures in a brighter light.
